Princeton Historical Commission - August 19, 2021

Attendees: Matthew Lindberg - chair, Larry Todd - clerk,  Joyce Anderson, Tom Kokernak

The meeting opened at 7:01 pm.

The meeting minutes for 7/15/21 were approved as written.

Matt reported Jane Morrisson is resigning from the commission.

Civil War Plaques:  Matt explained the financing of the cost and sent around the details. Larry gave an update: he met at Bagg Hall this morning with Bob Pearson from Leominster Monument and Phil Conners, our buildings’ maintenance manager. They confirmed where the plaques will be installed and the size of the space. Bob also took a piece of the broken plaque which has the lettering. He will confirm the correct size with the quarry and get the two slabs from them. Bob will produce a proof of the lettering on both plaques for our review and approval.

Larry said Bob asked to work on the lettering during the coming winter as the hand chisling will take a lot of time. The commission agreed to allow extra time and will expect the plaques to be installed in the spring of 2022.

Larry sent thank you letters to all those who donated to the plaque project.

Town Pound Sign: the weather has been difficult; they will try to get the sign up later this month.

Meeting House Cemetery: Matt spoke with Ta Mara and she plans to start work on repairs to the headstones by the end of August. There is no update regarding the town tombs.

Public Safety Building Committee: Matt attended their meeting in July; they are not currently dealing with anything that would involve the Historical Commission. Matt did say there may be an alternate site under consideration.

Temple Stuart Mill Road: Matt would like to see a pedestrian access created from Main street (Rt 140) to the road which would involve creating steps. Matt met with someone from DCR and they suggested using some existing flat stones. They would like to see a drawing of the proposed steps for their review. Matt would also like to see us place interpretative signage on the road to give some information about the chair factories.

Joyce suggested Gregg Oswitt could be a resource. Matt will contact him.

New business: Dot from the Wachusett garden club wanted the ok to do some planting on the common; not expanding but replacing some of the plants. Matt said this was fine.

Joyce noted we are now down a member; Matt knows someone who may be interested in joining and will contact them.

The next meeting will be remote and will be on Thursday, September 16 at 7pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:44 pm

Respectfully submitted,
Larry Todd, clerk
