Princeton Historical Commission
March 18, 2021

Attendees: Matthew Lindberg - chair, Carl Soderberg - vice-chair, Larry Todd - clerk, Jane Morrisson, Joyce Anderson

A Motion was made and approved unanimously to accept the meeting minutes from 2/11/21.

Matt said the town common policy we proposed was amended by the selectboard to say they would consult with the historical commission regarding any proposed changes. Matt sent us a copy of their approved policy. Karen said they gave permission for a temporary storybook walk on the common hosted by the library.

It was noted there is a new group interested in the beautification of the common; Matt will ask Karen about this. Jane noted this is on the selectboard agenda for March 23.

Public safety building and design: Carl sent a draft letter to us which he read regarding the interest of the historical commission in the project. A motion was made and approved to send the letter to the board of selectmen. There is time before the project moves forward for the commission to become involved.

Carl showed us some conceptual sketches and other designs he has looked into. Is it possible to incorporate design elements of the school building in the new structure ? Carl also showed pictures of an old coast guard station dated about the same period as the school (1906).

There was some discussion regarding the need for the new public safety facility and the need to take action as the costs of construction continue to rise.

Civil war plaques: Matt submitted a request for the annual town warrant for $8500 to pay for the lettering and installation of the marble pieces which were donated. Larry said the samples of carving should be available to review in a week or two.

Matt asked about the on-line meeting regarding the Massachusetts Cutural Resource Information System (MACRIS) held earlier in the day. Larry intended to join but was busy boiling maple syrup. The meeting was recorded and basically walked through the use of MACRIS; Larry sent a link to the group.

Temple Stuart Mill street: Matt confirmed that our commission was taking the lead on this and he will follow up with his contact at DCR.

The historical society contacted Matt and asked if our commission was planning an event to mark the 250th anniversary of the incorporation of Princeton. We have nothing planned at this time.

Matt is waiting to hear from the town accountant regarding the current balances in our accounts and an explanation of where the money has gone from the sale of house plaques.

Joyce offered to contact Tamara, the gravestone preservationist, about work still to be done in Meetinghouse cemetery. The cemetery commission attended our last meeting and may also have information about this.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 15 at 7pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:08 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Larry Todd, clerk
