Central Mass Rail Trail

cmrt pic

The Central Mass. Rail Trail is in development as a continuous trail for hiking and biking from Boston to Western Mass. It is incomplete, but several sections in the Wachusett area are now open to hikers, bicyclists and cross-country skiers. The surface of this trail is generally excellent, with smooth gravel and stone dust trails with little elevation. Many of the sections in Central Mass go through woodlands and along picturesque streams and ponds..

The Princeton HIkes! group has done several hikes along this route, including:

  • The Rutland-to-Barre end which runs parallel to Route 122 into Oakham
  • The Glenwood Road to Rutland State Forest section, which goes past several nice ponds
  • The West Boylston to Holden section, which goes along the Quinapoxet River, includes many side trails that are fun to explore, and can connect to Red Fox Farm in Princeton via Trout Brook trails.
