Selectboard seeks feedback on sign policy

The Selectboard is working on a sign policy for town property and rights of way. One aspect of the policy regards Wayfinding signs (“Ice cream .5 miles”, “Antiques – Next left”, “Joe’s Seafood next left”). The Planning Board took great care in drafting its sign bylaw to minimize clutter, keep things simple, and preserve the rural nature of our town. The Selectboard would like to make sure that it follows those same guidelines. What are your thoughts on the following rules for Wayfinding signs? If you are a business, would you take advantage of this opportunity? Does it meet your needs?

  • Businesses may request up to three signs
  • In-town businesses only
  • Only businesses accepting “foot” traffic (Pizza place allows people to just drop in, so does bank. Home power-washer or deck installer does not.)
  • Sign requester must provide written authorization from abutting landowner.
  • Sign locations must be jointly worked out between the Town Administrator and the business (Town may say no if location request is in someone else’s front yard, for example.)
  • Sign design and dimensions are specified in the sign bylaw.
  • Town will charge business for the cost of creation and installation of the signs and $Y/sign/year subsequently.

The Selectboard encourages you to send your feedback to them at selectmen@town.princeton.ma.us.
