Apply To Fill Vacancy on Princeton Board of Assessors

The Princeton Selectboard and Board of Assessors are seeking qualified residents to apply to be on the Princeton Board of Assessors

This seat was most recently held by Robert Cumming, who ran for and won a seat on the Princeton Selectboard during the May 2022 Annual Town Election. No town citizen pulled nomination papers to run for the seat and two individuals received more than one write-in vote, which created a failure to elect. Per MGL Chapter 41 Section 11, the Selectboard may appoint a resident to fill this vacancy for the remainder of the term (May 2025) or until the May 2023 Annual Town Election.

In Princeton, assessors are elected to three-year terms. State law requires that assessors value all real estate and personal property subject to taxation. Assessed valuations are based on "full and fair cash value" as of June 30th preceding each fiscal year. All of the assessors' activities are intended to ensure that taxpayers pay an equitable tax. Every year assessors conduct market studies to determine what value adjustments are required to maintain property values at or near 100% of market value. The State Department of Revenue requires assessors to submit their valuations for review and certification every three years and complete specific courses. Assessors do not raise or lower taxes. That responsibility falls to those citizens who choose to be involved with Town meetings and the budget preparation process. Assessors simply assess taxes in an amount sufficient to cover state and local appropriations.
